GMA Network takes an aggressive step in winning back the hearts of its viewers.
The month of July wasn’t a good month for the network, except from the success of the magazine news program Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, Eat Bulaga, Revenge of Dragon Lady, and Pepito Manaloto: Ang Tunay na Kwento.
The Better Woman, which started last month, did not draw attention from the viewers despite its daring scenes and for-adults-only content. Instead, it pulled down the TV ratings of Love You Two and Emperor: Ruler of the Mask.
In the past years, GMA’s strengths were their news programs, Fantasy series, animes, Asianovelas, and child-friendly content.
The network attempted to change the landscape of Philippine television by bringing out new dishes for its viewers.
In 1999, GMA Network produced and aired their very first fantasy series titled Pintados.
In 2002, GMA Network officially revealed a new logo and image campaign. The network launched a stronger daytime and primetime lineup.
In 2003, the network launched its Reality-based Artista Search called Starstruck. GMA Public Affairs produced Extra Challenge which was hosted by Paolo Bediones.
GMA aired its first daily fantasy series Mulawin in 2004. Mulawin launched Richard Gutierrez and Angel Locsin to stardom.
Due to the success of Mulawin, GMA dominated the TOP 20 in TV ratings and became the number one TV Network in the country. Even former ABS-CBN President and Chief Content Officer Charo Santos admitted it in her book My Journey: The Story of an Unexpected Leader.
After Mulawin, Angel Locsin starred in the first full-length television series adaptation of Darna.
In 2007, GMA aired Marimar, the very first adaptation from a Mexican Telenovela. Marimar became the vehicle to stardom for Marian Rivera who became the network’s Primetime Queen.
The following years, GMA continued to do adaptations of popular foreign television series. It includes Rosalinda, Ako si Kim Samsoon, La Lola, Zaido, Endless Love, Stairway to Heaven, Coffee Prince, and a lot more.
In 2011, GMA produced and aired the most expensive primetime series, Amaya. GMA spent Php 3 million on costumes alone.
GMA continued to produce quality content for television the following years.
In 2016, GMA aired a requel (prequel + remake + sequel) of Encantadia. It was the only primetime series of GMA that actually beat ABS-CBN’s Ang Probinsyano. However, its victory was short-lived due to the unexpected pregnancy of one of its main actresses.
Upcoming GMA Primetime Shows of the 4th Quarter of 2019
Even though GMA continued its commitment to produce innovative shows, TV ratings on primetime started to plummet last July.
Before The Better Woman premiered last July, GMA shows were winning against its rival shows from ABS-CBN. There were days that Sahaya, Love You Two, and Are You Human?defeated their respective rival programs from ABS-CBN.
In response to this decline, GMA is currently cooking four new shows that aim to win back its viewers. These programs will be headlined by GMA’s most prized talents.
Descendants of the Sun
The most anticipated Philippine adaptation of the South Korean television series of the same name will finally air this year. It will star Dingdong Dantes, Jasmine Curtis-Smith, and Rocco Nacino. The leading lady of Dingdong Dantes is yet to be revealed.
One of the Baes
After the success of the phenomenal afternoon television series My Special Tatay, GMA Public Affairs will bring BoBrey love team to primetime. Ken Chan will be reunited with his onscreen loveteam Rita Daniela.
The Gift
The Gift was not announced in its upcoming programs for 2019 plug last January. Before it was revealed that it is a “new” show, some speculated that this is the new title of Mga Kamay ni Milagros since all the shows mentioned in the plug have already aired.
Fresh from the blockbuster success of Hello, Love, Goodbye, Alden Richards will topbill this TV series. Onanay stars Jo Berry and Mikee Quintos will also join the “Pambansang Bae” in this upcoming TV series.
Beautiful Justice
Since Rosang Agimat was shelved, its actors moved to new projects. Thea Tolentino will be assigned to an upcoming afternoon show Madrasta while Jeric Gonzales will star alongside Alice Dixson in Protege. Gabbi Garcia, which was supposed to topbill Rosang Agimat, moved to a new project called Beautiful Justice.
Beautiful Justice will be topbilled by Gabbi Garcia, Bea Binene, and Yasmien Kurdi. The beautiful ladies will be joined by two of the hottest leading men in the Kapuso Network, Derrick Monasterio and Gil Cuerva.
Conclusion
GMA had proven in the 90’s that local shows didn’t have to be run-of-the-mill or bakya to win over the public. In the first decade of 2000’s, GMA ruled the local television by producing notable shows.
What we liked about GMA before is that they educate their viewers by promoting substance over junk. During the network’s heyday, most of their shows were kids-friendly.
So, what happened?
It seems that “Video killed the Radio Star” when the Television gained popularity. And now it is the internet that is killing the television. But as you can see, radio is still alive but with less audience than it had before. Same thing would happen to TV if the networks won’t leverage the game.
They need to bring back the excitement of its viewers. They don’t need to compete with the other technologies but instead use it as instruments to promote television shows.
