GMA reshuffles Primetime lineup

The Switch is happening!

Starting Monday next week, August 19, GMA Telebabad will have a new schedule. Two of its programs will switch timeslots.

A lot has happened over the past few months. First was the Kapuso program Rosang Agimat being shelved. It was supposed to replace Kara Mia but due to the accident that took place on its set, GMA Network decided to cancel the show.

Second was Sahaya moving to an earlier timeslot to give way to The Better Woman.

The Better Woman was released earlier than scheduled so the marketing for the said show was rushed. The new Kapuso show suffered low ratings and even pulled down the ratings of the shows after it.

In efforts to restore the interests of viewers, GMA announced four upcoming programs that will replace the current primetime lineup.

To give a great start for the upcoming programs, GMA decided to switch the timeslot of Love You Two and The Better Woman.

Sources say that One of the Baes will start airing next month and will replace Love You Two. Descendants of the Sun and The Gift also started taping so it means that these programs will be released very soon.

The Gift might replace Sahaya but until now there's no announcements if Sahaya will receive another extended run. Descendants of the Sun might take over the timeslot of The Better Woman.

Now, the question is, what will be the timeslot of Beautiful Justice which was initially reported to be on primetime as well?

ABS-CBN’s The Killer Bride (Pilot) Episode Commentary

After Sino ang May Sala? Mea Culpa ended, ABS-CBN offers another suspense-thriller / mystery drama series, The Killer Bride. The drama series tackles about family feud, siblings rivalry, and scandals.
The plot of the series revolves around Camila dela Torre, portrayed by Maja Salvador, who fell in love with a man from an enemy clan, Vito dela Cuestas.
The Dela Torre and Dela Cuesta clans have been mortal enemies since the death of Belinda dela Torre. Alledgedly, some members of the Dela Cuesta clan raped Belinda and covered it up to make it look like a suicide.
To make the long story short, Camila dela Torre and Vito dela Cuesta is a forbidden love affair.
Now that we have given you some background about the pilot episode, here are some of our comments:

1. Romeo and Juliet

One thing we noticed about The Killer Bride is its similarity with Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. There’s nothing wrong about that as long as you give it another look and feel.
Even James Cameron’s The Titanic was inspired by Shakespeare’s masterpiece.

2. Mexican Telenovela

The cinematography and the wardrobes look like you’re watching a Mexican Telenovela. In the pilot episode of The Killer Bride, the viewers have seen impressive shots. It was like you’re watching a film created for television.

3. Casting

The cast of The Killer Bride includes Maja Salvador, Geoff Eigenmann, Cris Villanueva, James Blanco, Precious Lara Quigaman-Alcaraz, Joshua Garcia, and Janella Salvador, with the special participation of Dominic Ochoa and Eddie Gutierrez.
Most of the actors are versatile and respected in the Philippine film and television industry. However, the cast didn’t blend well as most of them wanted to take the spotlight.
On the first episode, I was only impressed by Maja Salvador, Lara Quigaman, and Eddie Gutierrez.

4. Full of ‘Sigawan’

Just a heads up, when you want to watch this show, remember to turn down the volume of your television as there’s a lot of shouting scenes.
“Bakit hindi na lang kayo magtabi-tabi?” that was what I said when I watched the first episode. When did shouting became the standard of acting nowadays?

5. Hiraya Manawari / Bayani

I also found the narration part to be quite disappointing. It feels like you’re watching the defunct shows from a long time ago, Hiraya Manawari and Bayani.

6. A Rip-Off of GMA’s Hanggang sa Dulo ng Buhay Ko?

No. It’s quite different than Hanggang sa Dulo ng Buhay Ko. I only managed to watch the first three episodes of Hanggang sa Dulo ng Buhay Ko since GMA only uploads the first 3 episodes of their ongoing TV series on YouTube.
I would say that I was hooked and actually wanting for more but I couldn’t watch an afternoon series due to its schedule.
The style of Hanggang sa Dulo ng Buhay Ko is quite similar to the American Soap Opera Dark Shadows while The Killer Bride is like a Mexican Telenovela. I also found some similarities between The Killer Bride and GMA’s La Vendetta.

7. Marcella

Another thing I noticed is the mental blackout of Maja Salvador’s character. It’s quite similar to the blackouts of the main character in Marcella on Netflix.
You lost consciousness and when you wake up, VOILA!, you’re a murderer!
Camila’s Waking Up Scene was shown twice in the pilot episode. The first one was during the Prologue and the second one was at the episode’s ending.
You will notice in the prologue that she woke up with no blood on her dress and she wasn’t holding a knife or something. Then the narrator said, “At ito ang kwento ng kanyang buhay at kamatayan.”
At the ending part, same scene but she has blood all over her and a knife on her hands.
Well, it’s Pinoy Soap Opera after all. She’s innocent and she was just framed by her uncle who wanted to take revenge on the Dela Cuestas. LOL (I may be wrong too, but still she’s innocent.)

8. Script

Despite its ensemble cast, the show’s greatest downfall is its ridiculously written script. The first episode is usually the most crucial part of the series but they failed to introduce the characters well.
Apart from the characters, the writer wrote too much of coincidences. Like when Eddie Gutierrez and Cris Villanueva were talking about Camila, then Camila was actually IN THE SCENE. Wow Man!
Another coincidence scene was when Camila was trying to save a poor woman from getting raped by Dominic Ochoa. (I’m sorry I kept saying the actor’s name since these weren’t well established in the script.) Geoff and Camila were holding hands when James Blanco arrived the scene. WOW MAN!
The timeline of the story wasn’t also shown in the first episode but as a viewer, you’ll assume that this is in the 1920s to 1970s – the era of Hacienderos riding horses.
Then suddenly… there’s a cell phone? (Well, sabi ng producer: kailangan maipasok ang Sun Cellular endorsement. LOL)
There’s a car but you chose to run?
And go to your stable to get your horse? Fuck Logic.

Conclusion

Superb cinematography, the editing is great, actors acted well, but what this series is lacking is a good script.
It’s 2019 but the concept is still pang-Pocketbook material.
Will I watch the second episode? Honestly, no, it’s not my cup of tea. I would rather watch on Netflix over this.

'Through Night and Day' Movie Review

Conceptualized by Alessandra de Rossi herself, Through Night and Day is a 2018 Filipino romantic comedy film.

The film was released last November 14 but up until now, we are still into this movie.

The plot of the story revolves around Jennifer (Alessandra de Rossi) and Ben (Paolo Contis), childhood friends turned lovers for 13 years.

Ben asked Jennifer to marry him and as a gift, he bought plane tickets to the dream vacation destination of Jennifer, Iceland.

Jennifer planned to shoot their Pre-Nup video in Iceland.

Their relationship will be tested by challenges and hardships. How much can they sacrifice in the name of love?

Script

The concept of Through Night and Day was initially written by Alessandra but due to conflict of schedule, she was not able to complete it. Her friend Noreen Capili helped her to complete the script.

Inquirer had the opportunity to interview Alessandra. According to her, “When I went there, it was snowing so hard, and everything was just white. And at the time, I was also doing a television series (“Since I Found You”), and I was taping every other day. I could only manage about 10 sequences.”

Cinematography and Direction

Veronica B. Velasco helmed the director seat. She was able to showcase the beauty of Baguio City and Iceland.

Her timing in comedy scenes were all smooth. Dramatic scenes were also well executed and were totally tear-jerking.

Conclusion

We have watched a lot of local and international movies this year but we can say that Through Night and Day left a mark on us.

We couln't say anything bad about Alessandra's performance as she delivered it with flying colors. We can see Meryl Streep through her. She's a versatile actress who can do different genres.

What we love about Alessandra is her choice of projects. She doesn't accept projects just to earn money but to showcase her talent for acting.

Alessandra did not carry the movie alone. Her onscreen partner, Paolo Contis also gave colors to the film. His portrayal as Ben was also something to look forward to.

The movie is divided in two parts. The first part will make you laugh while the second half will surely make you cry a lot.

GMA to draw out its aces in Q4 Primetime lineup

GMA Network takes an aggressive step in winning back the hearts of its viewers.
The month of July wasn’t a good month for the network, except from the success of the magazine news program Kapuso Mo, Jessica SohoEat BulagaRevenge of Dragon Lady, and Pepito Manaloto: Ang Tunay na Kwento.
The Better Woman, which started last month, did not draw attention from the viewers despite its daring scenes and for-adults-only content. Instead, it pulled down the TV ratings of Love You Two and Emperor: Ruler of the Mask.
In the past years, GMA’s strengths were their news programs, Fantasy series, animes, Asianovelas, and child-friendly content.
The network attempted to change the landscape of Philippine television by bringing out new dishes for its viewers.
In 1999, GMA Network produced and aired their very first fantasy series titled Pintados.
In 2002, GMA Network officially revealed a new logo and image campaign. The network launched a stronger daytime and primetime lineup.
In 2003, the network launched its Reality-based Artista Search called Starstruck. GMA Public Affairs produced Extra Challenge which was hosted by Paolo Bediones.
GMA aired its first daily fantasy series Mulawin in 2004. Mulawin launched Richard Gutierrez and Angel Locsin to stardom.
Due to the success of Mulawin, GMA dominated the TOP 20 in TV ratings and became the number one TV Network in the country. Even former ABS-CBN President and Chief Content Officer Charo Santos admitted it in her book My Journey: The Story of an Unexpected Leader.
After Mulawin, Angel Locsin starred in the first full-length television series adaptation of Darna.
In 2007, GMA aired Marimar, the very first adaptation from a Mexican Telenovela. Marimar became the vehicle to stardom for Marian Rivera who became the network’s Primetime Queen.
The following years, GMA continued to do adaptations of popular foreign television series. It includes RosalindaAko si Kim SamsoonLa LolaZaidoEndless LoveStairway to HeavenCoffee Prince, and a lot more.
In 2011, GMA produced and aired the most expensive primetime series, Amaya. GMA spent Php 3 million on costumes alone.
GMA continued to produce quality content for television the following years.
In 2016, GMA aired a requel (prequel + remake + sequel) of Encantadia. It was the only primetime series of GMA that actually beat ABS-CBN’s Ang Probinsyano. However, its victory was short-lived due to the unexpected pregnancy of one of its main actresses.

Upcoming GMA Primetime Shows of the 4th Quarter of 2019

Even though GMA continued its commitment to produce innovative shows, TV ratings on primetime started to plummet last July.
Before The Better Woman premiered last July, GMA shows were winning against its rival shows from ABS-CBN. There were days that SahayaLove You Two, and Are You Human?defeated their respective rival programs from ABS-CBN.
In response to this decline, GMA is currently cooking four new shows that aim to win back its viewers. These programs will be headlined by GMA’s most prized talents.

Descendants of the Sun

The most anticipated Philippine adaptation of the South Korean television series of the same name will finally air this year. It will star Dingdong Dantes, Jasmine Curtis-Smith, and Rocco Nacino. The leading lady of Dingdong Dantes is yet to be revealed.

One of the Baes

After the success of the phenomenal afternoon television series My Special Tatay, GMA Public Affairs will bring BoBrey love team to primetime. Ken Chan will be reunited with his onscreen loveteam Rita Daniela.

The Gift

The Gift was not announced in its upcoming programs for 2019 plug last January. Before it was revealed that it is a “new” show, some speculated that this is the new title of Mga Kamay ni Milagros since all the shows mentioned in the plug have already aired.
Fresh from the blockbuster success of Hello, Love, Goodbye, Alden Richards will topbill this TV series. Onanay stars Jo Berry and Mikee Quintos will also join the “Pambansang Bae” in this upcoming TV series.

Beautiful Justice

Since Rosang Agimat was shelved, its actors moved to new projects. Thea Tolentino will be assigned to an upcoming afternoon show Madrasta while Jeric Gonzales will star alongside Alice Dixson in Protege. Gabbi Garcia, which was supposed to topbill Rosang Agimat, moved to a new project called Beautiful Justice.
Beautiful Justice will be topbilled by Gabbi Garcia, Bea Binene, and Yasmien Kurdi. The beautiful ladies will be joined by two of the hottest leading men in the Kapuso Network, Derrick Monasterio and Gil Cuerva.

Conclusion

GMA had proven in the 90’s that local shows didn’t have to be run-of-the-mill or bakya to win over the public. In the first decade of 2000’s, GMA ruled the local television by producing notable shows.
What we liked about GMA before is that they educate their viewers by promoting substance over junk. During the network’s heyday, most of their shows were kids-friendly.
So, what happened?
It seems that “Video killed the Radio Star” when the Television gained popularity. And now it is the internet that is killing the television. But as you can see, radio is still alive but with less audience than it had before. Same thing would happen to TV if the networks won’t leverage the game.
They need to bring back the excitement of its viewers. They don’t need to compete with the other technologies but instead use it as instruments to promote television shows.
