Why Cosplay Is Popular

Cosplay is popular for many different types of people worldwide. It is both a hobby and a professional career which brings fun, enjoyment, and challenges for those individuals who are creative, imaginative, and dare themselves to conquer skillful challenges earning personal accomplishments and rewards.

What is cosplay? Cosplay is a coined word created by Japanese reporter Nobuyuki Takahushi in 1984 for the words Costume Play.

Okay that is one serious fact. Let's move on to why cosplay is popular.

There are many reasons but the first and foremost is "Personal fun and enjoyment" followed by:

  • Be somebody else for a day
  • Self-expression
  • Love of acting and the theater
  • Satisfies artistic creativity
  • Pride and accomplishment in creating a costume and its accessories
  • Ignites imagination
  • Make friends and Social Gatherings
  • Becoming part of a large community

Fun and Enjoyment - A day which allows playing or acting. Releasing behaviors which match the costume being worn. Play acting a fantasy or wish such as becoming Superman or a famous celebrity.
Be somebody else for a day - Copy and design a costume of a favorite character wearing all accessories from head to toe and walk in their shoes for self and crowd reaction. It may be a portrayed sex goddess like Marilyn Monroe or an historical president such as Abraham Lincoln.

Self-Expression - Wearing an original costume displaying our skills and talents to design and construct. The desire to create a personal imaginative character.

Love of acting and the theater - Amateur and professional actors and actresses may use this outlet as an audition for entertainment employment.

Satisfies artistic creativity - Some people love to create unusual fashions and the type of characters who would wear these creations.

Pride and Accomplishment in creating a costume and its accessories - Some costumes are very simple or may be purchased. Costume creations are inspired by characters in video games, cartoons, anime, comics and books. Creating armor worn by warriors, people becoming transformers, and mythical accessories are very challenging of mind and physical skills.

Ignites Imagination - Thinking about something that does not exist. Then bringing it into physical existence with creativity. A writer draws a character from his imagination which will become a character in the story. The creativity will address appearance, clothing style, speech pattern, and whatever else is needed to make this character believable. It is the same for the imagination of cosplayers.

Friends and Social Gatherings - There are thousands of cosplayers in many local communities and countries participating in conventions, community projects, advertising events, and any function which welcomes enthusiasts both online and offline. These occasions offer opportunities to make new friends.

Becoming a part of a large community - There is a stereotype that introverts or geeks are the largest number of people who enjoy this activity. Creating these costumes adds excitement to offset employment or personal lifestyle which may be boring, mundane, or stressful. It's a hobby on the opposite spectrum of the everyday work day which offers fun, enjoyment, and self-accomplishments with pleasurable rewards.

The Best Instructable Projects For Your Home & Garden

invisible bookshelf instructable

by
Sal Dawson
Sometimes spicing up your surroundings a bit is all a person needs to turn a new page. There's nothing better than taking someone's ideas and advice and improving it yourself! This is an article for those who love DIY, have some free time on their hands or just like showing off how awesome their home & garden are.
Check out these simple yet creative Instructables and decide for yourself if DIY is not the peak of the ordinary man's creativity:

The Invisible Bookshelf

invisible bookshelf
Yes, *insert mandatory Harry Potter reference here*. Also, if you get one of these in your home, you can make a social experiment and see what percentage of the people who enter it will go "Wow, how are those books standing on their own like that?".
The best part - you can get more than one!

The Vertical Garden

vertical garden
This one is actually made from a standard shoe pocket holder, which we must all agree is a bit too tedious to be actually anyone's shoe holder. This would look much better, especially in your garden!
Experts also recommend since this way your small plants are better protected against pests and invaders (like your up-to-no-good kitty for example).

How to Remake a Small Balcony

remade balcony
For anyone who shares my unhealthy obsession with cute balconies, this has got to be the best part of the list!
Get your own dream balcony with the perfect amount of shade and privacy that you'd want:

Food-growing Pipes In The Garden

pipes in the garden
Granted, this one may not look so pretty, but man is it useful!
Pest experts agree that this is a sure way to avoid insects attacking your plants. If you take this advice, you also save yourself a lot of back pain that comes along with picking up the fruit from the ground level. And perhaps what is most important, this simple trick reduces the water usage in your garden significantly.
The best part is yet to come:
You get to make use of all your compost!
compost in garden
If you've never made your own compost before, here's a list of items you surely have lying around your kitchen every day: grass cuttings,
soft prunings, annual plant, and weed remain before they have set seed, fruit and veggie scraps, old cut flowers, tea bags, coffee grounds
.

The Sealed Ecosystems

sealed ecosystems
The perks of this one are pretty obvious - it just looks awesome. Imagine waking up and seeing all the tiny worlds that you've single-handedly created.
Or, for those who like a dark twist, the worlds you can potentially destroy!

The Saggy Cushion Fix

couch cushion
This just couldn't be simpler, or more elegant. And the cherry with this project is, it only costs you 1$ to do it.
Any self-respected home-decor maniac knows that beauty is in the details, and this is one detail that could go a long way!

The DIY Mosquito Trap

pest trap
The way this works is, just like any trap, it actually attracts the pests. The flying insects get tricked into laying their eggs on the sock on top, afterwards, their hatched larvae fall into certain death.
So, this is definitely for anyone who feels like becoming a mass exterminator in his spare time. It's perfectly justifiable, though, because what's the point of doing all these things to improve your home and garden, if you have to share them with some insect that's after your blood!
If any of you do try one of these ideas, feel free to contact Sal Dawson @ Instructables and maybe even share photos of your masterpieces! Remember, new things are great but what's even more satisfying is taking an old thing and reviving it.

GMA reshuffles Primetime lineup

The Switch is happening!

Starting Monday next week, August 19, GMA Telebabad will have a new schedule. Two of its programs will switch timeslots.

A lot has happened over the past few months. First was the Kapuso program Rosang Agimat being shelved. It was supposed to replace Kara Mia but due to the accident that took place on its set, GMA Network decided to cancel the show.

Second was Sahaya moving to an earlier timeslot to give way to The Better Woman.

The Better Woman was released earlier than scheduled so the marketing for the said show was rushed. The new Kapuso show suffered low ratings and even pulled down the ratings of the shows after it.

In efforts to restore the interests of viewers, GMA announced four upcoming programs that will replace the current primetime lineup.

To give a great start for the upcoming programs, GMA decided to switch the timeslot of Love You Two and The Better Woman.

Sources say that One of the Baes will start airing next month and will replace Love You Two. Descendants of the Sun and The Gift also started taping so it means that these programs will be released very soon.

The Gift might replace Sahaya but until now there's no announcements if Sahaya will receive another extended run. Descendants of the Sun might take over the timeslot of The Better Woman.

Now, the question is, what will be the timeslot of Beautiful Justice which was initially reported to be on primetime as well?

ABS-CBN’s The Killer Bride (Pilot) Episode Commentary

After Sino ang May Sala? Mea Culpa ended, ABS-CBN offers another suspense-thriller / mystery drama series, The Killer Bride. The drama series tackles about family feud, siblings rivalry, and scandals.
The plot of the series revolves around Camila dela Torre, portrayed by Maja Salvador, who fell in love with a man from an enemy clan, Vito dela Cuestas.
The Dela Torre and Dela Cuesta clans have been mortal enemies since the death of Belinda dela Torre. Alledgedly, some members of the Dela Cuesta clan raped Belinda and covered it up to make it look like a suicide.
To make the long story short, Camila dela Torre and Vito dela Cuesta is a forbidden love affair.
Now that we have given you some background about the pilot episode, here are some of our comments:

1. Romeo and Juliet

One thing we noticed about The Killer Bride is its similarity with Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. There’s nothing wrong about that as long as you give it another look and feel.
Even James Cameron’s The Titanic was inspired by Shakespeare’s masterpiece.

2. Mexican Telenovela

The cinematography and the wardrobes look like you’re watching a Mexican Telenovela. In the pilot episode of The Killer Bride, the viewers have seen impressive shots. It was like you’re watching a film created for television.

3. Casting

The cast of The Killer Bride includes Maja Salvador, Geoff Eigenmann, Cris Villanueva, James Blanco, Precious Lara Quigaman-Alcaraz, Joshua Garcia, and Janella Salvador, with the special participation of Dominic Ochoa and Eddie Gutierrez.
Most of the actors are versatile and respected in the Philippine film and television industry. However, the cast didn’t blend well as most of them wanted to take the spotlight.
On the first episode, I was only impressed by Maja Salvador, Lara Quigaman, and Eddie Gutierrez.

4. Full of ‘Sigawan’

Just a heads up, when you want to watch this show, remember to turn down the volume of your television as there’s a lot of shouting scenes.
“Bakit hindi na lang kayo magtabi-tabi?” that was what I said when I watched the first episode. When did shouting became the standard of acting nowadays?

5. Hiraya Manawari / Bayani

I also found the narration part to be quite disappointing. It feels like you’re watching the defunct shows from a long time ago, Hiraya Manawari and Bayani.

6. A Rip-Off of GMA’s Hanggang sa Dulo ng Buhay Ko?

No. It’s quite different than Hanggang sa Dulo ng Buhay Ko. I only managed to watch the first three episodes of Hanggang sa Dulo ng Buhay Ko since GMA only uploads the first 3 episodes of their ongoing TV series on YouTube.
I would say that I was hooked and actually wanting for more but I couldn’t watch an afternoon series due to its schedule.
The style of Hanggang sa Dulo ng Buhay Ko is quite similar to the American Soap Opera Dark Shadows while The Killer Bride is like a Mexican Telenovela. I also found some similarities between The Killer Bride and GMA’s La Vendetta.

7. Marcella

Another thing I noticed is the mental blackout of Maja Salvador’s character. It’s quite similar to the blackouts of the main character in Marcella on Netflix.
You lost consciousness and when you wake up, VOILA!, you’re a murderer!
Camila’s Waking Up Scene was shown twice in the pilot episode. The first one was during the Prologue and the second one was at the episode’s ending.
You will notice in the prologue that she woke up with no blood on her dress and she wasn’t holding a knife or something. Then the narrator said, “At ito ang kwento ng kanyang buhay at kamatayan.”
At the ending part, same scene but she has blood all over her and a knife on her hands.
Well, it’s Pinoy Soap Opera after all. She’s innocent and she was just framed by her uncle who wanted to take revenge on the Dela Cuestas. LOL (I may be wrong too, but still she’s innocent.)

8. Script

Despite its ensemble cast, the show’s greatest downfall is its ridiculously written script. The first episode is usually the most crucial part of the series but they failed to introduce the characters well.
Apart from the characters, the writer wrote too much of coincidences. Like when Eddie Gutierrez and Cris Villanueva were talking about Camila, then Camila was actually IN THE SCENE. Wow Man!
Another coincidence scene was when Camila was trying to save a poor woman from getting raped by Dominic Ochoa. (I’m sorry I kept saying the actor’s name since these weren’t well established in the script.) Geoff and Camila were holding hands when James Blanco arrived the scene. WOW MAN!
The timeline of the story wasn’t also shown in the first episode but as a viewer, you’ll assume that this is in the 1920s to 1970s – the era of Hacienderos riding horses.
Then suddenly… there’s a cell phone? (Well, sabi ng producer: kailangan maipasok ang Sun Cellular endorsement. LOL)
There’s a car but you chose to run?
And go to your stable to get your horse? Fuck Logic.

Conclusion

Superb cinematography, the editing is great, actors acted well, but what this series is lacking is a good script.
It’s 2019 but the concept is still pang-Pocketbook material.
Will I watch the second episode? Honestly, no, it’s not my cup of tea. I would rather watch on Netflix over this.
